ELIZABETH COSTELLO

ELIZABETH COSTELLO COMES TO PARİBU ART ON 18 NOVEMBER AND 13 DECEMBER

In his novel Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons, J. M. Coetzee places the writer Elizabeth Costello at the centre of the story, using her perspective to explore the role of the intellectual, the relationship between the writer and the work, and a range of ethical questions. Is an intellectual’s responsibility to write for the unseen and give voice to the voiceless? But what if a writer does not feel worthy of, or appointed to, such a role? What if that writer lacks belief?

Adapted and directed by Saim Güveloğlu, Elizabeth Costello is a play about theatre itself. What can a stage tell us? Can it create space for major transformations, or does it simply offer a place for collective entertainment? Amid all the complexity of the present day, is it still possible to make a play simply because it is aesthetically beautiful? The production seeks to resist taking sides, moving between different perspectives rather than delivering a single message.
