ERMİŞ COMES TO PARİBU ART ON 19 NOVEMBER
For twelve years, a wise man has lived in Orphalese, a port city. At last, he is ready to return to his homeland. The people who have come to bid him farewell say, “Speak to us one last time. Share with us your wisdom and your truth.” They ask him about love, marriage, children, laws, freedom, work, pain and death.
And so, The Prophet begins to speak.
Khalil Gibran’s timeless masterpiece is adapted for the stage through the storytelling possibilities of the modern meddah tradition.
Throughout the performance, the storyteller takes on thirty different characters, revealing different facets of the human spirit. Like an old chest that has remained closed for years and is slowly opened, the many states of being human — our pain, memories, ethical questions and moral values — gradually unfold and expand.
In each section, Ermiş reveals another voice, another story, another secret. At times, it offers guidance; at times, a confession; and at times, it asks the questions people have avoided asking themselves for years.
Having reached millions of readers for more than a century, Ermiş brings to the stage not only the words of a wise man, but also humanity’s shared memory. Blending poetry with theatre, and storytelling with performance, ERMİŞ invites the audience on a journey that feels both ancient and strikingly contemporary.
“Even as the ages change, what echoes in the human heart remains the same. In this city, every chest is opened partly to remember and partly to understand. Because the chest within us is the only silent witness to the journey we take into ourselves.”
